MBC 2011 Star Surf & Skate Round 1
What a day! On Saturday the 26th of March the Mandurah Bodyboard Club held the first round of competition presented by Star Surf & Skate in perfect fun conditions at Mandurah Wedge, Pyramids Beach. Huey the surf god shined brightly upon us as he knew that WA bodyboard legend Ryan Hardy would be attending all the way from Margaret River and made sure the waves where there to greet him and the MBC crew. With a host of new members who turned up to gain a bodyboarding lesson from the champ the scene was set for the day to be an enjoyable time for all. Hardy hit the water with the first heat of A division to lend a hand to first time wedge rider and our youngest member Henry Gibson, 9 years old from Falcon. Henry put on a show for all and must have had some wise words from Hardy as he placed second in his first ever heat, which at such a young age is an inspiration to see. With the largest ever field in A division to hit the water it was Jake McNamara, a new member who had a convincing win over Billy Jones, Scotty Field and Lachlan Hancock. The AA division saw one of the closest finals of all four competitors in club history with Storm Spencer snatching a narrow win from Mitch Warr, Stephen Dodd and Boden Hay. Brendon Gabel took out the Drop Knee division with a 7.0 avg with his final wave putting him ahead of George Humphreys, Luke Zimmer and Declan Genge from Margaret River. Fresh of the plane from Hawaii after taking out the Under 20’s division of the Raw Pro Junior in Newcastle earlier in the year was WA’s up and coming star performer Lewy Finnegan. Lewy managed a rare perfect 20 out of 20 to take the AAA division title from Jake Metcalfe, George Humphreys and Callum Layton.
