ROUND 4 POSTPONED

Hello People,

Unfortunately we have decided to postpone round 4 until the new year due to the bad forecast for this weekend.

We hope to kick off in around Feb/March and run round 4 separate to the first round of the 2010 season. New 2010 members will be able to compete in round 4 but will not receive any points to club champion awards. New calendar for 2010 and entry forms will be available at round 4.

Remember to play it safe over the holidays in those high rollers!

ROUND 3

Dylan Brand
Jack Bunyan
Empty
Josh Fullston

Yesterday (2nd August) Singleton beach provided some fun waves for MBC's 3rd round for the year. A few new faces blended in with the usual mob on the beach spectating some great bodyboarding talent throughout all divisions.

New comer to the club Josh Fullston was consistently surfing good throughout the day, winning all his heats, and when he made it to the final he wasn't going to back down, taking out a well deserved 1st place. Scott Galbraith made the most of the onshore conditions for the final throwing down several big rolls but couldn't find the right waves to spin-to-win placing 2nd just behind Josh. Fresh from Bali Miller Best rolled into 3rd place narrowly pipping Pinjarra's Jarrod Baird.

Returning to the comp scene after almost a year was Rockingham hellman Jeremy Smith who rode smooth all day but couldn't land the moves he needed to in the final, but for not doing a competition for a year, 4th place in AAA division is still a pleasing result. Falcon grom George Humphreys was dominating his heats prior to the final landing an air forward and a big ARS, but when the winds turned onshore the waves failed to create waves with good ramps leaving George in 3rd place. Cameron Dicks spun his way into 2nd place showing smooth forward and reverse spins in the various conditions of the day, posing himself as a serious threat for future comps. Taking out AAA division was Charlie "Chucky" Carter from Dianella. Chucky was riding with great style and speed throughout the day getting numerous barrels and completing perfect reverse hacks continuously, which earned him the prized position.

Miller Best tried to show his versatility by entering Drop Knee but couldn't find his footing, but still didn't fail to impress the crowd by doing double knee to prone rolls. Margaret River DK demon Declan Genge wouldn't go down without trying, but couldn't find the right section to bash in the mushy onshore conditions. Along with the other DK competitors, Matt Rackich couldn't prove himself, placing second in the challenging onshore conditions, but Singleton Experience proved effective with Chad Abbott grasping 1st place for drop knee division.

Cottlesloe grom Calvin Best placed 4th place after doing numerous stylish reverse spins, placing just behind Ben Hardman (3rd Place) who didn't find the ramps as appealing as Round 2, where he scored 1st place. Davis "wingnut" Blackwell and George Humphreys were battling it out for 1st place from the start of the final to the very end, but George just had the edge over Wingnut placing 1st.

Round 3 was an overall great day which showcased some great bodyboarding on all different levels. We look forward to seeing you at Round 4 (15th/16th August - Best day).

MBC THIS SUNDAY!

Hey Members,

Round 3 is going to be held this Sunday 2nd August at Singleton Beach Main Car park, so it is easy for us to set up and pack up and not to annoy the residents and people risk getting parking fines etc.

The main car park is at the end of Singleton Beach Road (The entry road into Singleton) and has a large and a small car park with toilets attached to it so you should not miss it.

We will be there at 7 to start setting up so if you can make it there then to help out to ease the load and get the day off to a quick start that would be great! The banks at Singleton have been pretty cool lately so hopefully the swell stays around and provides a fun day for all!

See you sunday!

On Sunday (12th July) Mandurah Bodyboard Club hosted Round 2 in some fun conditions at South Singleton. With some good winter banks hanging around, some 2 foot peaks were provided for some great conditions for the competitors.

First in the water was a keen A division with a mix of new and old faces. Jayden Muir couldn't find the right waves in the final to showcase his Singleton local knowledge, but still managed to come a tidy 4th place. Storm Spencer stepped up to recieve a well deserved 3rd place just being pipped by Brendon Walley in 2nd. Taking A division out was Troy "Nitro" Coppola who showed great wave choice and skill with the ability to move up into a higher division.

Halls Head bodyboarder Ben Hardman dominated the AA division with some huge rolls followed by a tidy invert and an ARS, Ben showed some great skill all day with the ability to throw down these moves on a variety of rights and lefts. Placing just behind Ben was George Humphreys, who was consistent with spin to roll combos all day earning him 2nd place. 13 year old Davis Blackwell didn't go down without a battle placing in 3rd with Matt Rakich finishing in 4th place.

The Dropknee division was taken out by Chad Abbott who seemed to be in a spin-to-win state of mind which has never seemed to fail for the Singleton Local. Brendon Gabel showed his versatility by taking a break from prone to carve his way into second place, to be followed by fellow 90% prone rider Matt Rackich who received 3rd Place. Driving all the way up from Margaret River, Declan Genge couldn't seem to find the right waves to show what down south dropknee is all about, but still put some scores on the board to achieve 4th place.

AAA Division was a highly competitive division to watch with the finalists making the absolute best of the waves. Michael "Grudge" Grainger (4th Place) got off with a cracking start with numerous spin to roll combos, but couldn't find the waves in the dying minutes to keep up with the high scores being set by the other competitors. 3rd place was grasped by George Humphreys who got narrowly beaten by his good friend Davis Blackwell who got a good barrell to big roll to 3 spins which earned him 2nd place. Brendon Gable had the final in the bag right from his first wave, landing a big backflip and then getting numerous deep barrells to roll combos, Brendon showed what a consistent surfer he is throughout the day and proved that he has the ability to take his bodyboarding to the next level.

Standout Waves of the day:

Matt Rackich, set left barrell (pictured)
Brendon Gabel, 5 second barrell to roll, 9 points from 2 judges
Ben Hardman, Take off pit to huge roll to foward spin to reverse spin
Davis Blackwell, Barrell to roll to spin x 3 (barrell and roll pictured)
Michael Grainger, spin into the barrell to roll

Round 2 was a great day for all but wouldn't of been as good as it was if it wasn't for John Barker, The Blackwells, our Judges and our Sponsors who provided prizes and equipment for the day; Star Surf & Skate, Reeflex Wetsuits, Bunnings Warehouse & Exclusively Bodyboarding. Thank you to all that helped out, we look forward to seeing you all at Round 3 which is scheduled for the 1st/2nd of August (Best Day).

COMP TOMMORROW!!

The long awaited/rescheduled/stuffedaroundwith/sick/madog ROUND 2 is TOMMORROW at SOUTH SINGLETON. For many of you, you will refer to South Singoes as the carpark with the lookout, soz but your wrong. The comp will be held at the very south end of Foreshore Drive, mainly to get away from the retarded Singleton stand ups. I've attached a map which is basically X marks the spot just incase you have some of those mentioned stand ups in your blood!

ROUND 2 THIS SUNDAY

The long awaited MBC Round 2 will get underway this Sunday at Singleton. With offshore winds and a 2m swell, we should be greeted by some punchy peaks. We will meet at the very south end of Singleton Beach, we will start setting up at 7am with registration from 7.20am and first heat before 8am.
Remember we will have the BBQ firing and choccies an

d drinks for sale to help with fundraising for the club so bring along some extra coin along with your entry fees.

With fantastic prizes for judges & finalists in each division, this is a round not to be missed!

See you there!

Same swell/wind at the same break around the same time last year. Fingers crossed Singoes provides some good banks like it did in this picture by Jack Bunyan from Round 4 last year!

ROUND 2 POSTPONED

Hey MBCers,

Round 2 was scheduled for this weekend but due to the lack of swell again we have decided to postpone it for another weekend. I will confirm this new date with you all in the next few days once the committee has had the chance to discuss it further. With the current swell dropping rapidly it looks as though the weekend will be below the 1.3m forecast which is basically one foot and with high tides this makes for slow, fat waves which is what we all hate!

We would rather make the decision of postponing it now rather than on the day as some members come from Perth and even Margs so it make sense to do it now.

It keeps the weekend free to watch the Shark Island Trials anyway. See http://www.limited-edition.net.au/?cat=3 for the latest on what’s going down.

Kind regards

John Barker – the pres!

NEW MBC ROUND 2 DATES + NEW CALENDER

Hello Members,

Thanks for those who turned up last Saturday to Tips for round 2 but due to lack of swell (Jack Bunyan forgot to do a swell dance on Friday night) we were forced to cancel and reschedule. The new Calendar is below. We have simply moved round 2 to round 3 dates and moved round 3 to the old State Round 3 date as this has moved to September to allow for the pros to compete on home soil as it clashed with world tour events in South America. So for those of you who did not make it, make sure you get down and support the club that supports you at round 3!!

PS – Reeflex wetsuits and accessories are now available at Destination Surf in Falcon. So pop in and see Gavin for all your Reeflex gear. If there is a size or type he has not got in stock, be sure to ask as he can order it in for you in a jiffy no problemo!. You can also go into the draw to win a Reeflex wetsuit by visiting the Bodyboarders Surf Co website and filling out a survey. http://www.bodyboarders.com.au/store/

See you in the water!

LOWEST PRICES ARE JUST THE BEGINNING.....

Mandurah Bodyboard Club would like to give a massive thanks to Bunnings Warehouse for willingly supporting the club. Bunnings has just donated to the club :
  • 1 Fabric shelter for our brand new barebeque
  • 4 Fold-up chairs for our judges
  • A new chilly bin to keep those beverages as cold as they come

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last ten years or so Bunnings Warehouse Mandurah is located near the Gordon Road lights in North Mandurah. Just look for the massive red hammer printed on a even bigger green shed! If you have any hardware needs bunnings is the ebb of tools! So what are you waiting for...... Lowest prices are just the beginning.

ROUND 2 THIS SATURDAY!

Hey Gang,

We are going to hold Round 2 on Saturday at “Tips”. Tips is approximately 800-1000m south of pyramids beach or the cut/wedge. You can get there by driving to the cut golf course club house and keep going and park in front of the 2 high rise buildings currently under construction, you can’t miss them! Then you will need to walk down the fairway on the south side of the high rise and onto an existing pathway that will bring you to a lookout where if you look to the south you will see the break doing its thing.

Tips has both left and right hand peaks of equal length with a section on offer to bust some high scoring manoeuvres which will make for some exciting spectating and judging. Speaking of Judging,
We are now going to reward people who judge. We require around 10 - 12 members to be judges throughout the course of the day so it gives the committee members time to run the comp smoothly and quickly. You will be required to judge a minimum of 5 heats and in return we will give you a Mega Meal Deal. That includes a hotdog, icy cold can of soft drink and your choice of a Cadbury chocolate.
The good folk at Reeflex are also going to be giving a prize to the best judge on the day so if you are keen, when you come and see me first up in the morning to register make it know that you are interested in judging. If you have not judged before, don’t let that stop you, we are more than willing to help you. Learning and knowing the judging criteria also helps you improve your surfing so you are doing your selves a favour by becoming a judge. You may wish to go on and judge state rounds, national tiles, aussie and world tour competitions!!

Remember to bring your $10 for each division you want to enter and also lunch money for our fundraising sausage sizzle shnizzzle.

Star Surf & EBB will be proving vouchers for all 4 divisions. $50 - 1st, $35 - 2nd, $20 - 3rd, $10 - 4th. You snooze, you lose!

See you Saturday from 7am onwards, comp to start around 7.40am

Kind regards

EBB STATE SERIES ROUND 2, CITY BEACH/SCARBOROUGH

Chob making mandurah proud at Scarborough - day 2
Alex Whitehead gets a sick one at City Beach on Saturday

Halsey walking into a win

Alex and his roll bowls

BOLD: MBC RIDER/TEAM REEFLEX

The EBB State Bodyboard Series 2009 Presented by Unite Clothing,
Supported by SunSmart & Surfing Western Australia.

Alex Halsey proves he’s the real deal at Scarborough Beach.

(Monday 25th May 2009) Wet and wild weather didn’t affect the performances of WA’s best bodyboarders at the second round of the EBB State Bodyboard Series held over the weekend. After some pretty serious weather in the metro area leading into the event, conditions that greeted competitors on day one weren’t exactly pleasant. A solid swell and fresh southerly winds made the going tricky, with most Perth beaches maxing out or with huge rips running through them. Event officials were forced to move the event from Scarborough to City Beach, where the groynes provided some protection from the breeze as well as some great barrelling right and left hand bowls in the 3-4 foot range.

“We looked right along the coast this morning from as far south as Fremantle right to Scarborough to try and find the best location. Given the size of the swell and wind direction most spots were pretty crazy, we have to consider competitor safety as well as the weather forecast when choosing the best event site.” Said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks, who was suitably impressed with the waves that were on offer.

“There were some really good ones, nice barrel sections as well as plenty of ramps for boosting.”

After a record number of entries at the first event for 2009, the second round was no different with over 80 competitors looking qualify of the WA State Bodyboard Team. With the 2009 Bodyboard National Titles scheduled to be held at Duranbah in Queensland, there was a lot of motivation to do well.

The preliminary heats of the Open Men’s division were highlighted by the performances of Alex Whitehead (North Beach), Rob Fergusson (Woodlands), Brendan Gabel (Mandurah), Ben Veitch (Margaret River), and Johno Russell (Madora Bay). But it was the new up and comers that were turning heads as well. Alex Halsey (Woodvale), Lewy Finnegan (Ocean Reef) Aiden Stampalia (Joondalup) and Charlie Carter (Dianella) all surfed above their age divisions and put some of their older rivals on notice with some solid scoring waves. None more so than Halsey, who was by far the most consistent competitor of the weekend, and looked to be the man to beat in both the Open and Junior Men’s.

Other’s to impress on day one were Brydyn Vivian (Dunsborough), Pat Meyers (Kingsley), Cameron Dicks (Mandurah), Scott Henderson (Trigg), and Tom Morris (Duncraig) in the U18 Junior Men’s division. Tom Purvis (Margaret River), Cameron Hutchins (Ocean Reef), George Humphries (Mandurah) and Jake Metcalfe (Hillarys) were the stand outs for the U16 Cadets division.

With the swell moderating overnight, day two saw competition return to Scarborough Beach with clean offshore winds and sunny skies making a welcome appearance. Although the waves were smaller on Sunday, after the week of big swell and strong winds the banks were well groomed and provided some good shape for those that had made it into the finals.

The blue ribbon Open Men’s final saw the best surfers from the weekend all vying for the win. Alex Halsey led the charge with Rob Fergusson close on his heals. Halsey picked of the better waves and was rewarded with a heat winning 7.50pt ride for a waves on which he completed four massive rolls on. Fergusson had to settle for second, and after a while away from the competition arena it was a great result for him. Ryan Hands (Mandurah) finished third and Bryce Nettle (Scarborough) had to settle for fourth place.

Halsey now moves to the top of the Open Men’s ratings after his second place finish to Ryan Hardy at the Mandurah Wedge. Its been a big year for Halsey who has recently signed big deals with bodyboarding industry heavy weights Unite Clothing and Science bodyboards.

Halsey went on to take out the U18 Junior Men’s division as well and with that result secured the 2009 U18 State Title. Halsey defeated Charlie Carter, Scott Henderson and Aiden Stampalia, who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

“Im stoked with the result, this title means a lot to mean and to win the Open’s has made for an excellent weekend,” said Halsey who will look to defend his Open Men’s Title when the final round of the three event series heads to the South-West later in the year.

In other results from the weekend Tim Fowler (Padbury), won the Senior Men’s division ahead of John Barker (Mandurah) in second, Lee Szcepanski (Margaret River) third and Shem Mahoney (Mosman Park) fourth. Fowler threaded a deep tube to oust Barker from the lead in the dying minutes of the final.

The Drop Knee division was won by Chad Abbott (Singleton) who picked wrapped up the State Title with two wins from as many starts. Abbotts longevity continues to impress with his cool and collected approach. Abbott defeated Mike Dobson (Fremantle) for the win, with Mark Boehm (Scarborough) in third place, and Steve Portilla (Joondalup) finishing in fourth.

“Its just good to have some new faces to compete against and its always good to have a win”. Commented Abbott.

George Humphries (Mandurah) celebrated his fifteenth birthday in style winning the U16 Cadets division ahead of close friend Lewy Finnegan in second. Jake Metcalfe finished in third and Tom Purivs rounded out the top four.

Other winners from the weekend included Lauren Williams (Margaret River) in the Open Women’s division, Kacey Lee Middleton (Geraldton) won her first ever State Title after winning the the Junior Women’s division. Davis Blackwell (Mandurah) was another to secure a State Title after back to back wins in the U14 Grommets division. Steve Black (Thornlie) won the Masters division and also the State Title.

Once again the metro area provided great waves for the EBB State Bodyboard Series, all attention now turns to the final round of competition and the highly anticipated EBB Pro, which will be the biggest weekend of bodyboarding that WA has ever seen.

The first event for 2009 will be remembered for the great new event location, the star studded field which included the who’s who of WA bodyoarding, and the record number of entries that made this one of the biggest and most hotly contested bodyboarding events in years. With the new and old guard of bodyboarding competing alongside on another the level of competition was extremely high and provided nothing less than inspiring entertainment for those lining the rocks at Wedge.

Mandurah Bodyboard Club members, as well as Reeflex Wetsuits (Club Sponsor) team riders all surfed amazingly well on the day, as you will see in the results below - Good work guys.

ROUND 1 WRITEUP + PHOTOS

On Sunday the 3rd of May saw Mandurah Bodyboard Club host their first round for the 2009 season in great conditions at The Wedge. With light winds, a good swell and lots of sunshine it was a fun day had by all.

The committee was stoked to have the brand new tent up as many hours of fundraising has made it worthwhile and now we have a home that benefits us all. With Hotdogs flying out of the tent along with drinks and choccies your are sure to see more investments into the club in the future. A big thanks to all the Committee and helpers on the day.

2009

Mandurah Bodyboard Club has had a great start to 2009. With a huge success with the fundraising from the first state round and registration day this year (Thanks to Leigh Blackwell and everyone else that helped) , we have acquired a very good new tent, barbeque, a whole bunch of new members and now this blog. This Blog will over take last years (http://mandurahbodyboardclub.blogspot.com/) and will be frequently updated with news and pictures for all the members and the communities likings.

Stay Tuned,
MBC.
