Saturday the 9th of October saw the Mandurah Bodyboard Club complete their fifth and final round for 2010 presented by Star Surf & Skate at Pyramids Beach. Although conditions were not favourable at first, competitors made the most of the mornings building and consistent swell with light onshore winds, which were a delight to spectators and beach goers alike as the temperature climbed throughout the day.
With a record number of club members in 2010 and valuable club championship points on offer, many competitors seemed focused from the get go to make a great start to the final round and secure their final placing in the overall ratings to become a club division champion.
The AAA division final became a battle of the best ARS’s (Air Roll Spin) and was a seesawing two horse race between eventual winner George Humphreys and Lewy Finnegan. With both riders leaving their best scores till the end of the 25 minute final, it was Humphreys who used his last wave to secure a half point victory over Finnegan. It was then left to Davis Blackwell and Jake Metcalfe to battle it out for the minor placings with Blackwell taking third and Metcalfe fourth by the smallest of margins.
In the AA division Calvin Best dominated the final to win his first round for 2010 over fellow competitor Boden Hay who also posted his best result for the year. Best managed to post the two highest wave scores of the final to walk away with a comfortable win. Hay secured second place just ahead of Stephen Dodd in third and Jack Kerr in fourth.
Mitch Warr had the A division final won in convincing fashion with his first two waves and never looked like being threatened by Jesse Owen in second place, Scott Field in third and Josh Woodroff fourth.
The Drop Knee final was a battle of two regulars in Chad Abbott and Declan Genge versus two novice riders in George Humphreys and Davis Blackwell and was the highlight of the final round. In the end it was the seasoned Chad Abbott taking out his third consecutive and convincing win for the year. Genge managed to stay ahead of dark horse Humphreys in third and Blackwell fourth.
The trophies for overall club division champions for 2010 were then presented with competitors best 4 out of 5 results going towards their overall points tally the fifth and final event was a must for some competitors to perform at their best to hold or better their positions.
George Humphreys needed to win the final round to take the lead from Brendan Gabel in the blue ribbon AAA division and he did just that. Despite not making the final in round five Davis Blackwell claimed first in the AA division and Matt Rakich second.
The four riders in the running to win the A division title made the days final and with no rider winning more than one round previously it made for a four way battle until the end, Mitch Warr’s second win for the year secured overall victory ahead of Scott Field, Jesse Owen and Josh Woodroff.
Declan Genge’s second place in the final round made sure he took home the Drop Knee division title ahead of Luke Zimmer, Chad Abbott and Matt Rakich.
In memory of Ryan and Wade McCurdy the Manduarah Bodyboard Club has recognised the past club members by presenting the McCurdy Brothers Memorial Trophy for excellence in bodyboarding and spirit for the first time. The inaugural winner of the trophy was Declan Genge, a keen, friendly and respected club man Declan is a well deserved winner of the trophy that will be passed on every year to a new club member.
It was great to see the members take full advantage of the free all day BBQ and loads of prizes supplied by generous sponsors won through great effort in some amusing competitions played out at the end of a very enjoyable day.
The Manduarh Bodyboard Club has several state team representatives competing for a national title in Queensland come early November. To assist our members financially with the expensive cost of traveling interstate, the Mandurah Bodyboard Club has fundraised throughout the year to provide each member with $300 towards their costs. The club boasts 4 former national title winners and with Brendan Gabel, Davis Blackwell, Lewy Finnegan, Cam Hutchins, George Humphreys, Boden Hay, Calvin Best, Chad Abbott and John Barker all heading to Queensland to represent Western Australia we look set to increase that number.
